This beautiful $1000 Consolidation Stock is one of several different issues prepared for the state of South Carolina near the close of the Reconstruction era. The purpose of these issues was to assist the state in recovering from the disastrous effects of the American Civil War. Since South Carolina was the first state to leave the Union (and where the firing on Fort Sumter occurred), Northern politicians were especially harsh on this state. It would be many years before South Carolina, and the South as a whole, would be able to look forward to a future filled with promise and hope. Printed by the American Bank Note Company, the central vignette features a cotton boll surrounded by six American flags and military equipment. A small vignette of the god Mercury appears at the left, while a seated Native American maiden, supporting a shield and pole with a liberty cap atop can be seen at the right. At the bottom are the seated figures of a Continental soldier and Lady Liberty, with two shields between them with an angel blowing a horn flying above. A bold, green "1000" overprint dominates the center of the document, while the whole is surrounded by a geometric border, also printed in green.

This particular piece was never issued, and is virtually as nice as the day it was printed. Some very light toning can be discerned along the edges, especially on the less often viewed reverse. Overall dimensions are approximately 8.75 x 14 inches.
