As with virtually all of the early North Carolina issues, this note bears no attractive vignette or colorful overprint. Each end of the piece bears an intricate scrollwork design with "BY AUTHORITY OF LAW / Receivable in Payment of all Public Dues" and the denomination. The issuing authority and the financial obligation appear at the center, with the numerical denomination in scrollwork at the upper right and lower left. The imprint of the printer, F. W. Bornemann of Charleston, South Carolina appears along the lower border. It is dated October 4, 1861 and is hand numbered and signed in period brown ink. The back, as usual, is blank.

This particular piece is in crisp un-circulated condition, with bold signatures and very sharp contrast. The borders are cut close, though this is common on notes of this era. A nice representative example of this early issue.
