Though not actually a bond, this piece is listed here due to the fact that it is dated August 14, 1862 and involved a monetary transaction made during the Civil War. As stated in the document, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is indebted to "The Commissioners of the Sinking Fund of the State of Pennsylvania"the considerable (for that period) sum of "Two thousand two hundred and forty nine Dollars and thirty eight cents", with an interest rate of five per cent per annum. This interest was to be paid semi-annually at the Farmers & Mechanics Bank at Philadelphia, the guarantor of the loan. This certificate was printed by Thomas Leitch, Printer and Binder, 111 South Third St and features a small adaptation of the state seal at the beginning of the text. An embossed bank seal appears at the lower left, with the signatures of the vice president, cashier, and transfer officer of the bank dominating the lower right.

Two vertical folds and three "X" cancellations are present at the center, with light toning scattered throughout. These documents are much scarcer than most individuals realize, and probably a bargain at the current market level. Overall measurements are 7.75 x 9.25 inches. Very fine condition.
