As volunteer enlistments began to wane, government officials needed to find an alternative to keep the dwindling armies full. With the threat of conscription looming over each area, many towns and counties resorted to offering cash incentives to any young men who would volunteer. These incentives, called bounties, were financed by bonds issued by the various communities. Most of these bonds were redeemed and subsequently destroyed, leaving very few for modern collectors. Incredibly, we have been able to acquire a second Union bounty bond, this one from the town of Freehold in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The denomination is printed in bold, green numbers in the center of this bond, while the state seal of New Jersey, surrounded by agricultural products, appears at the top. Three members of the township committee have signed in the lower right hand corner, while the clerk has signed in the lower right. Each of the signatures has a line drawn through it, apparently upon redemption, as there are no other cancellation marks present and one coupon is still attached.

As with all bonds of this size, this piece has been folded several times, causing a few minor separations at the fold junctions. The paper is crisp and white, providing excellent contrast to the words and vignettes. Two or three minor toning spots. An extremely late war issue, being dated February 24, 1865. A fantastic opportunity to add one of these items to your collection.
