While several books have recently been published on how to properly attribute and assemble a collection of Confederate or Southern States paper money, none have addressed the dealers and collectors who were among the pioneers in this fascinating aspect of Civil War study. Co-authors Pierre Fricke and Fred Reed have successfully filled that void with this heavily illustrated 338-page work, accompanied by a free DVD with several special bonus features. The body of the book follows the history of the collecting of Confederate paper money from the close of the Civil War through the end of World War II, with particular emphasis paid to the early dealers of this material, and the collectors that they assisted. Many of these individuals are illustrated by contemporary woodcuts or photographs, as are many of the advertisements printed during the period covered in the book. Many of the names of the dealers and collectors will be familiar to those who study Confederate fiscal material, but several may be new, even to the most die hard aficionado. The stories surrounding these individuals, as well as the notes that they sold, are both informative and entertaining, and should provide the reader with many pleasant hours of enjoyment. The accompanying DVD features a census of most of the rarer Confederate varieties, along with illustrations and helpful information regarding these highly collectible issues. Several of Mr. Fricke’s resources are also included, the highlight of which is a visual presentation entitled “History of Collecting Confederate States of America Paper Money”. For those familiar with Mr. Fricke’s earlier works, the quality of research and attention to detail will not come as a surprise, but to those new to the field, this book should excite and enlighten, and hopefully, lead these nascent collectors to a fuller understanding of the part those pioneers of our hobby have played.
