Following the success of his mammoth earlier work on this same topic, author Pierre Fricke has reduced the size with this book, but certainly not its usefulness. The first portion of the book offers a detailed breakdown of the various aspects in assembling a collection such as type notes, varieties, watermarks, and different types of paper. Grading, one of the most important and influential factors affecting the value of currency, is discussed in great detail, with photographs of actual notes being used to illustrate the various grades. Information on several peripheral collecting areas such as counterfeits, bogus backs, and advertising notes is included to broaden your understanding and appreciation of authentic Confederate issues. The primary portion of the book, comprising over 300 pages, features an in depth description of each of the notes comprising a complete collection, as originally defined by the late Grover Criswell. Each of the notes is fully described and well illustrated, with excellent close-up views to assist the collector in identifying the many varieties that appear on these pieces. Unlike his earlier work, the illustrations in this book are in color, as opposed to black and white. A rarity number is assigned to each of the issues, with a numerical scale included so that the collector can determine the actual number of specimens of a given issue that are believed to exist. As part of the overall description, each type note is valued in several states of preservation, with prices assigned for individual rarities within each type. Several appendices are included at the conclusion of the work, one of which deals with Confederate bonds, a close adjunct to the currency issues (the bonds are listed by Criswell and Ball numbers, with prices given in four different grades). Unlike his original work, which was approximately 800 pages long, this book is only 454 pages and measures 6.25 x 9.25 inches, making it easy to carry to any coin or paper money show. For anyone interested in Confederate currency, this book is indispensable. A must have book.
